Communication Groups

The Speech and Language practice offers group interventions for children and young adults experiencing social communication and/or speech and language processing difficulties.

Group interventions include support in understanding and expressing emotions and managing anxiety relative to communication with others. Group sessions enable students to meet others experiencing similar difficulties to them and provide an opportunity for discussion about issues important to them in a sheltered and well supported environment. They are encouraged to develop a personalised toolkit of strategies to help make stressful communication situations easier for them.

Groups run once monthly on a Saturday and the groups are carefully arranged to ensure that children and young adults are working with others with similar needs in an appropriately compatible group. Once a group is assigned, regular and consistent attendance is expected to ensure appropriate benefit from this form of intervention.

A young adult group is also offered once a month, midweek, in the evening, which involves a structured group session at Armitage House, Poundbury, followed by an optional social outing or activity supported by a therapist. There are opportunities to try different types of food, and opportunities to take part in pub quizzes or play pool. Walk and talk opportunities are provided in the Summer, followed by a meal and/or drink in a pub, or we may have a group barbecue.

There is a regular group routine, the pace is gentle, and the other students all know what it is like to experience social communication anxiety and quietly welcome newcomers to the group with understanding and empathy.

What People Say

Our son has been attending Speech and Language Therapy with Karyn for over four years and the progress he has made is truly incredible. When he first started, it was very difficult for others to understand him, and he often became frustrated trying to communicate. With the support, patience, and expertise of both Karyn and Gill, he has made amazing strides, and his speech is now clear.

Currently, he is working within a group session which has been a wonderful opportunity for him to build his social connections and practice communication in a more natural setting. It has been such a joy to watch him grow, not only in his speech but also in his ability to connect with others with increasing confidence.

We are so grateful for the consistent dedication and care he has received throughout this journey. The difference it has made in his life — and in ours as a family — is beyond words. Thank you!

It has been wonderful for my son to be included in a social communication group with other children. All the children love the session, and don't even realise they are learning whilst playing and having fun.

As parents, it's been lovely to meet other families in similar situations and to realise we are not alone.
