THERAPY FOR ADOLESCENTS
The Speech and Language Practice sees young adults and students who experience a wide variety of speech, language, and social anxiety and/or social communication impairments in work, education and social settings.

We aim to understand each adolescent as the individual that they are, and to work with them towards the communication skills they would like to have. Adolescents are encouraged to value their individuality and to work towards being better able to manage any differences that cause them difficulty or concern.
Many autistic adolescents do not enjoy being sociable and prefer their own company or the company of trusted family members and friends. However, being able to communicate with less familiar people on occasion is an essential life skill. It can be helpful for these adolescents to develop a toolkit of social communication strategies to use when required. Adolescents may also benefit from learning how to use their unique skill sets to work effectively as part of a team.
Young adults with speech, language processing and/or social communication difficulties may feel insecure in education, work and social settings. As a result, they may present with challenging behaviours. The greatest of these might be seen at home. The Speech and Language Practice therapists seek to build understanding of the language processing aspects of any behavioural challenges and to guide parents and professionals in the use of more effective communication strategies and the young adults in more appropriate responses.
What People Say
Gill and Karyn stepped in when no one else would help us. They not only provided our son with regular, essential speech, language and communication therapy, but also supported him through the transition to college. Without their dedication, I have no doubt he would not have been able to attend college in the first place, let alone continue with his chosen course. Gill continues to give our son ongoing individual support and shows a deep understanding of his needs, as well as those of our family. Both Karyn and Gill support him in a regular Saturday communication group, which continues to be of huge benefit. We are truly grateful.
I have had the pleasure of working with Karyn over the last 10 years and have been very impressed with her professionalism and expertise. She is responsive to parents concerns and very approachable. Karyn has worked as a Speech and Language Therapist for many years and confidently uses her extensive knowledge and experience when working with children and young people with a variety of needs.
Speech and language therapy with Karyn and the team is a fantastic provision that we rely on and could not do without for our son, who is now a young adult. Karyn is not only a SALT but an all-round mentor who thinks outside the box in helping our son with preparation of skills for life, offering support, continuity, positivity, and inclusivity, harnessing his interests and building on his education in a safe and comfortable environment. Karyn is one in a million!
